Is ChatGPT education’s future or the downfall of creativity?

As a large language model, ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize the way education is delivered and consumed. With its ability to understand natural language and provide relevant information on a wide range of topics, ChatGPT can be a powerful tool for learners and educators alike.

ChatGPT can also provide learners with access to a vast amount of information. With its ability to process and understand natural language, ChatGPT can provide students with a wealth of information on any topic, from history to science to literature. This means that learners will no longer be limited by the resources available in their classroom or library, and they will have access to a vast and diverse array of knowledge. ChatGPT can help students to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them and encourage them to pursue their intellectual curiosity.

In addition to helping learners, ChatGPT can also support educators in their teaching efforts. With its ability to process and understand natural language, ChatGPT can assist teachers in creating personalized lesson plans and assessments. This means that teachers can spend less time on administrative tasks and more time on providing targeted instruction to their students. With ChatGPT, educators will be able to focus on what they do best: teaching and inspiring the next generation of learners.

That entire section was written completely by ChatGPT. It is almost impossible to distinguish it from human writing. While it does make some good points, it never mentions how it is taking away opportunities for students to practice writing and perfect their own skills. ChatGPT is an AI system that is free and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. There are obvious downfalls for something like this: for example, it allows students to have their essays written for them, including in college-level classes. If future doctors are using AI to do their work for them, how can we trust them to be actual doctors?

Furthermore, ChatGPT can do more than just write articles and essays. It can write anything from poetry to fanfiction to DnD campaigns in a matter of minutes. The problem is that while a human writer has only life experiences and education to pull from, AI has everything. They have everything on the internet to pull from. Not just copy but create an entirely new story or poem or whatever it’s writing for you. It will never run out of ideas.

It is unsettling that something with no emotions could get so close. As Richard Montgomery High School English teacher Margretta Browne puts it, “Clearly it’s [ChatGPT] not going anywhere, so we’re going to have to embrace it… I think that it might hinder creativity and that to me would be the saddest part.”
