“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and Other Chart-Topping Songs

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the movie Encanto has taken top spot on the Billboard Global 200 for the past three weeks and charted for eight weeks. According to Billboard, in just the Jan. 28 to Feb. 3 tracking week, the song accumulated 69.3 million streams and sold 19,000 worldwide.

Not only this, the album Encanto—with all of the songs from the movie—has kept its number one spot on the US- based billboard for the past six weeks of its total 12-week run so far. Other songs from the movie have charted individually on the Billboard Global Chart as well. “Surface Pressure,” sung by Jessica Darrow, who voiced Luisa in the movie, charts at fourteenth place this week in its eight-week run. Another song from the movie, “The Family Madrigal,” sung by Stephanie Beatriz, Olga Merediz and the Encanto Cast has charted for seven weeks and is currently ranks 34th. “Dos Oruguitas,” sung entirely in Spanish by Sebastian Yatra, also has a run of seven weeks and currently charts at 39th place.

What makes this song and album so popular? The Atlantic says the song—written by Lin Manuel Miranda and sung by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, and Stephanie Beatriz—owes its success to the popularity of Disney+ and growing appreciation of Latin pop among households, as well as the wide availability of streaming platforms. Due to new abilities to track how much a song has been played, and because CDs are going out of style, the numbers recorded are significantly more accurate.

Outside of Encanto, other chart-topping songs include “abcdefu” by GAYLE, placing second this week in its 14-week run; “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals, placing third this week in its 5- week run; “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” by Elton John and Dua Lipa, placing fourth this week in its 27-week run; and “Stay” by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber, placing fifth this week in its 32-week run.

The most notable new chart entries include “MAMIII” by Becky G and Karol G—sung entirely in Spanish—which jumped straight to seventh and is awarded as the highest ranking debut; “Stay Alive” by Jungkook, a soundtrack for BTS’s 7 Fates Chakho Webtoon sung entirely in Korean, in thirteenth place; and “Bussin” by Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby at 27th place.

After the Super Bowl on Feb. 13, many songs performed during the halftime show either appeared or moved up on the chart. In fact, of the 11 songs performed, six appeared on the charts. “Lose Yourself” by Eminem charted the highest at 25th place, “The Next Episode” by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg entered the chart at 35th place, and “In Da Club” by 50 Cent charted at 54th place. Other songs that charted are “California Love” by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman (77th place), “Family Affair” by Mary J. Blige (111th place), and “Forgot About Dre” by  Dr. Dre featuring Eminem (100th place).

Great job to all of these artists in their success!
