Review: Jurassic World Dominion

Jurassic World: Dominion is the third and final installment of the Jurassic World franchise and is set to release in theaters on June 22nd. With the first two movies of the trilogy garnering a staggering combined total of $2.98 billion from box offices, the third movie is predicted to achieve similar success.

The film’s first trailer was released a few weeks ago, and unveils an exciting twist for long-time Jurassic Park fans. Several main characters from the original Jurassic Park movie released in 1993 will be reprising their roles in Jurassic World: Dominion. This includes Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum returning as Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and Dr. Ian Malcolm respectively. The film also features BD Wong reprising his role as Dr. Henry Wu, though his character’s purpose in the film is still largely unknown.

The trailer leans heavily into nostalgia, as it opens with a quote from the late Richard Attenborough, who played John Hammond in Jurassic Park. The trailer also features several iconic quotes from the original movie, such as Ian Malcolm’s “life will find a way” and Alan Grant’s “don’t move.” As put by CNN reporter Frank Pallota, “That [nostalgia] should likely bring out old fans of the series who may be itching to see favorite characters Dr. Alan Grant (Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Dern) and Dr. Ian Malcolm (Goldblum) try not to get eaten.”

However, the film also has plenty of new things to offer to the Jurassic Park franchise. Several new dinosaurs appear in the trailer, such as the fully-feathered Pyroraptor, the Therizinosaurus, and the Quetzalcoatlus. Jurassic World: Dominion will be the first to prominently feature three feathered dinosaurs, a stark contrast to the historically inaccurate dinosaurs of the previous movies in the series. According to a review published by ScreenRant, many fans are excited to see what the new dinosaurs have to offer: “These awe-inspiring animals are responsible for some of the most suspenseful action sequences in Jurassic Park, and the tantalizing looks at the new ones to come have a lot to live up to.”

Furthermore, the sequel seems to branch out from the confined setting of Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom, as dinosaurs are seen chasing the main characters through the bustling streets of big cities. From the snowy mountains to the warm jungle, the trailer features breathtaking and diverse settings that are a significant improvement from the stagnant settings of the first two films in the trilogy.

These new elements resolve many of the issues that critics had with the first two Jurassic World movies and they simultaneously incorporate features that made the original movies so memorable. Fans of the Jurassic Park series, both old and new, have much to look forward to in Jurassic World: Dominion
