The Art of Art Therapy

Art therapy is identified as an enrichment to the human mind, engaging neurons in the right hemisphere of the brain. As a matter of fact, it is a form of therapy that many individuals use as a holistic treatment plan to engage the mind, body and soul. There are common misconceptions about art therapy implying that it isn’t a legitimate form of therapy or that it’s merely an “art class.” What many individuals fail to understand is that it has calming properties that enable expression and can be used as a supplement to medical care.

Art therapists are trained to engage with diverse groups of people in various settings like hospitals, schools, veteran clinics, senior communities and crisis centers. Their practice is guided by specific standards and rigorous training. The therapists communicate with individuals who are struggling physically, emotionally, and mentally so they can help them prosper within their spiritual growth in the long run.

Some examples of art therapy are painting, journaling, sculpting and drawing. Painting is widely used by art therapists as an avenue for patients to express themselves through a deliberate choice of color–sometimes also coupled with breathing exercises. In journaling, a unique aspect is that patients aren’t obligated to use words when writing and can scribble or sketch their emotions instead. With sculpting there are millions of options. Patients can sculpt how they feel if verbal communication or two-dimensional drawing is challenging. Sometimes, patients can sculpt people or memories that lead to the root cause of trauma.

Art therapy strengthens both visual-spatial coordination and emotional strength, enabling people of various backgrounds to express themselves in ways that work best for them. Perhaps through more discussions and awareness about complementary care, more patients can benefit from this unique approach.
