Photo Gallery: Academic disparities divide Maryland public schools

Western High School, the oldest all-girls public school, founded in 1844, transferred to its current site in 1967. The school has announced plans to undergo renovations starting in the summer of 2026, temporarily relocating students to the Chinquapin Middle School for the time being.

Following Western High’s transfer to its current location in 1967, there have been little to no renovations made to the preexisting building. Caution tape currently guards its auditorium seating, which is scheduled to undergo renovations starting in the summer of 2026.

In addition to broken sinks and leaky pipes, the schools’ bathrooms have several toilets that aren’t functioning. Being an all-girls school, one would expect that feminine needs would be properly addressed.

Nearly all of the drinking fountains at Western High School were either out of order or labeled as undrinkable. The time students spend hunting for necessities takes away from time dedicated to learning.
