Making Prom Dreams Come True: Once Upon a Prom

Prom night isn’t just an event; it’s a symbol of enchantment and cherished memories. But sadly, for many students, this magical evening remains a distant dream, overshadowed by financial struggles and personal challenges. That’s where Once Upon A Prom steps in, a beacon of hope committed to ensuring that every student, irrespective of their circumstances, is allowed to partake in prom. The trajectory of Once Upon A Prom—from its humble beginnings to its current stature, boasting an awe-inspiring collection of over 3,000 dresses and suits—exemplifies a testament to resilience, fortitude, and unwavering dedication.

The organization is hosting a giveaway, set for Saturday, April 13th, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm at Bethesda – Chevy Chase High School, assuring an inclusive and impactful atmosphere for everyone attending.

According to recent statistics, the average cost of prom can range from $600 to $800, making it prohibitive for far too many teens. Recognizing this, Once Upon A Prom aims to break down these barriers by providing new and gently used prom attire free of charge to any student who walks through their doors. Besides classic dresses and suits, they also offer a range of shoes, jewelry, nail certificates, and even makeup products. Sophomore volunteer, Catalina Barra, shared, “I’ll never get tired of seeing the happy faces of people leaving after having found their perfect prom dress.”

Once Upon A Prom’s mission is clear: to create a haven where dreams come true. Whether students are facing financial difficulties or navigating through complicated lives, Once Upon A Prom is committed to making prom a reality for all. Co-president of the club, Bethesda-Chevy Chase (B-CC) High School senior Brooke Silver, shared, “It’s really important to ensure that our doors are open to everyone… I want to make sure that prom is inclusive for [all].”

Thirteen years ago, this unparalleled initiative was founded by Carly Silver, a current Harvard Business School student. As Silver graduated from B-CC High School, the organization’s mission was passed down to each of her five younger sisters. Today, the reins of Once Upon A Prom are held by Brooke Silver and Anna Antinolfi, B-CC High School seniors who are continuing the long-lasting legacy.

However, they are not alone, as the Once Upon a Prom group is comprised of numerous other volunteers from B-CC High School, who wish to help prom become a reality, one dress at a time.

Sophomore Avital Baer, who has volunteered in the past, explained, “I do Once Upon a Prom because there is a great group of girls that lead it and participate in it and it’s overall a great way to empower the community.” Throughout the year, volunteers diligently engage the community in the pursuit of gathering prom dresses for the organization’s annual giveaway.

Collaborations fortify their endeavor with esteemed organizations such as Metropolitan Moving & Storage, Jump Design Group, Sandy Nails, Bloomingdales, and AcquaNails Inc, among others.

Co-president, Anna Antinolfi, said, “It makes me so excited to see everyone come in, it’s a fulfilling and happy feeling.” As a matter of fact, their impact has gone beyond the walls of their giveaway site. Certainly, Once Upon a Prom has been recognized by several media outlets, including the MoCo Show, FOX 5 Washington D.C., and MoCo 360. This recognition portrays Once Upon A Prom’s everlasting impact on students who come to the giveaway.

Barra, stated, “Prom is all about having one last incredible experience with your high school friends before you part ways, and [Once Upon a Prom] helps ensure that everyone can get that magical experience!” Thus, there is no secret that the significance of this initiative transcends quantitative metrics, resonating deeply within the hearts and minds of the countless students whose lives have been irrevocably touched.

Baer shared, “I wanted to get involved in the community, especially the local B-CC community and I felt that a good way to give back would be by bringing joy to those who need it.” The organization instills a profound sense of confidence, empowerment, and belonging by affording students the opportunity to attend prom adorned in attire that reflects their innermost aspirations.
