Another school with a remarkable basketball program is Georgetown Preparatory School, situated in North Bethesda, Maryland. The Hoyas are frequently featured in various news sources, such as the Washington Post, Prep Hoops and 24/7 Sports. Georgetown Prep also competes in the IAC and gets their well-deserved recognition. Last year, they secured a second-place finish. The team has also been ranked among the top 10 high school teams in the Washington, D.C., area by several outlets, including The Washington Post and Prep Hoops.
A school that deserves to be acknowledged for its hardworking basketball program is the Walt Whitman Vikings, located in Bethesda, Maryland. During their 2023-2024 season, the Vikings beat the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons, a local rival, to win the regional title, They also made it to the state championship game but fell short to Frederick, unfortunately ending the game with a score of 74-49. This marked the end of an impressive journey but underscored the program’s competitive spirit and potential for future success.
Basketball involves much more than just dribbling, scoring and shooting. MCPS boasts some of Maryland’s most exceptional coaching talent, which has been instrumental in the success of its teams. Under Bruce Kelley’s leadership, the Bullis Bulldogs have established themselves as a powerhouse within Maryland and beyond, consistently competing for championships. Kelley has developed a well-rounded team that excels in both offense and defense, nurturing a winning culture. Howard Blue has played a crucial role in the development of Georgetown Prep since he began coaching. Under his guidance, the Hoyas have evolved into a disciplined and well-rounded team. His dedication helps players achieve their goals, particularly in pursuing Division 1 opportunities. Similarly, Head Coach Chris Lun has cultivated a reputation for the Walt Whitman Vikings as a powerhouse in Maryland’s 4A class. Throughout his coaching career, he has led the Vikings to state championships three times, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, discipline and hard work.
