Our MCPS student-athletes always do their best and perform at the best level possible to represent their respective school proudly. This winter season has been no different, with each team taking each other to the limit and playing some very competitive basketball. We must say that they have not disappointed. This year’s basketball season has been entertaining, and with playoffs around the corner, players know what is at stake and to make sure that everything will be left on the court. So, let’s take a look at both Boy’s and Girl’s Varsity Basketball.
This season so far couldn’t be any more perfect for Damascus with a near perfect season in Boy’s Varsity Basketball. So far, the team sits on a 19-1 overall record and an 8-0 in the 3A/2A region. They have made a real statement this season and have definitely put themselves in a winning position that will breed the confidence they will need heading into playoffs. Damascus had their biggest win on Feb 14, where they hosted Northwood and ultimately won the game 70-30. However, right behind Damascus is Churchill’s 17-2 overall record. Churchill sits on top of the 4A South region with a 6-2 record. Their biggest win this season was against Blair on Jan 17 where they came out victorious in a 100-31 win. With a 19-0 record heading into their last game of the regular season, the Hornets were upset by Walter Johnson, losing 66-68 in a close battle. Despite the loss, the Hornets remain top of their division and seek to continue their dominance in the playoffs. But, as we all know, in sports, the favorites don’t always win, so keep an eye out for upsets in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, in Girl’s Varsity Basketball, Wootton has an 18-2 overall record and a strong 7-1 record in the 4A South region, where they are tied for first with Churchill. The 4A South region will be fascinating to watch, as the top two teams overall are both in 4A South, and Wootton and Churchill are definitely the favorites to win that region. If they do happen to meet each other in the playoffs, you can expect a real thriller. Tied for third overall with an equal 16-3 record are Seneca Valley and Clarksburg. Impressively, Seneca Valley went on a 10-game win streak lasting from Dec 19 all the way to Jan 27. Going over a month without defeat is an achievement in itself and a great positive to take away from the season for Seneca Valley. Clarksburg had their highest-scoring game on Jan 13, where they took on Damascus at home, leaving the game victorious with a 77-44 win. You can definitely count on the Girl’s Varsity playoffs to have non-stop excitement, as all the teams have relatively close records, so going into every game both teams will see themselves as the favorites.
Overall, all the basketball games have yet to disappoint, and for the seniors, we hope that they had the best season to remember. Still, we have been lucky enough to witness another great season of sports, and as the winter sports season comes to a close, the excitement won’t stop here, as spring sports are just around the corner.
