On Monday, Dec. 3, newly elected Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich was sworn into office after extensive preparations by his transition team. The nine county council members, including newcomers Gabe Albornoz, Andrew Friedson, Evan Glass, and Will Jawando were also sworn in at the ceremony.
Elrich, who was elected in November over fellow county council member and independent Nancy Floreen, as well as Republican Robin Ficker, reemphasized many of his campaign priorities during the Strathmore ceremony. As reported by the Bethesda Magazine, he addressed his commitment to affordable housing and the rights of tenants, as well as the county’s commercial zoning regulations.
“It all begins with economic development. Government can do a lot to improve our lives, but good jobs are the foundation of every successful family, neighborhood and community,” he said.
Elrich’s swearing in follows a month of careful preparation by his transition advisory team. The team consists of over 180 major countywide influencers across all sectors, including former members of the county council, city mayors, business leaders, board of education members, and local community leaders and organizers. This team has been working on detailed plans for Elrich’s policy priorities, which include affordable housing, sustainability, and early childhood education. These plans will assist Elrich as he enters his term as the new Montgomery County Executive.
