Quince Orchard High School’s spring musical Anything Goes was performed for the first time since 1991. The afternoons of April 13, 14, 20, and 21 were filled with lively music and angelic singing.
Set in the early 1930s, the musical takes place on a boat going from New York to England where a love triangle emerges.
Reno Sweeney, a popular nightclub singer, and a second-rate conman named Moonface Martin (also known as Public Enemy #13) help Billy Crocker, a lovelorn Wall Street broker, who has come aboard to try to win over Hope Harcourt. Harcour, however, is engaged to another passenger, Sir Evelyn Oakleigh.
This specific play was chosen for it not only being mostly family-friendly, but it being a lot of fun not only to be a part of, but to watch as an audience. Ever since auditions took place in January, students involved in the cast, crew, and pit orchestra have been working tirelessly on perfecting the musical. As a result, when watching the show, all the dancing, singing, acting, lighting, and music is, “done to near-perfection!” as one parent described it.
On the show’s closing night, the crowd gave the entire cast, crew, and pit a big standing ovation as they did bows on stage. According to one parent who attended, “I was blown away. I didn’t expect this level of talent from a musical done by a High School, but I was never bored for one second.” She also added how, “The Orchestra did a great job and added a lot to the show. People shouldn’t underestimate their contributions to the show, as has sadly been done in years past.”
Even though the show has ended, it’s clear based on the audience reactions that Anything Goes was nothing less than a smash hit. The last show of Anything Goes on Broadway was performed on July 8, 2012. Now, Quince Orchard High School has kept excitement about the show alive and well.
