Bethesda-Chevy Chase sophomore Eric Guerci defeated Richard Montgomery junior Rachit Agarwal in the race for the 38th MCPS Student Member of the Board of Education.
According to MCR Special Elections Administrator Sabrina Cauton, nearly 70,000 middle and high school students voted in this year’s elections. 30,679 students (48 percent) voted for Agarwal and 33,046 students (52 percent) voted for Guerci. Only 621 students cast blank ballots, or abstained from selecting a candidate. This was the closest election in recent history.
In his platform, Guerci supported improved facilities for athletic programs, reforms for homework, and increased support programs for student social and emotion wellbeing. Guerci received endorsements from former SMOBs Alan Xie and Justin Kim, who attended Richard Montgomery and Poolesville, respectively.
Guerci is currently the Vice President of MCR-SGA, Montgomery County’s countywide high school student government. His term as SMOB will begin in early July.
