Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr is bringing his knowledge of child education and his passion for teaching to his very first Book Club of the school year! By reading along with Dr. Starr, parents and students have the opportunity to ask him questions and discuss key issues in the education and child care arenas. This first club discussion will be held on Tuesday, January 8th at 7 p.m. at the Carver Educational Services Center.
The book club will first be discussing How Children Succeed by Paul Tough, a book that discusses why some children have the mix of motivation and volition needed to succeed, why others do not, and how to encourage children into habits that promote success. The book raises interesting questions about the big role that motivation plays in academic success and what parents can do to increase their child’s level of motivation.
This event is a great opportunity for parents to get to know Superintendent Dr. Starr better and learn about a relevant educational issue. But the issues that How Children Succeed brings up are for students as much as parents. This topic of motivation and success hits home for many students who do not put much thought into their schoolwork.
In order to be part of the studio audience and discuss How Children Succeed with Dr. Starr, RSVP to pio@mcpsmd.org. Viewers can participate from home by watching online or on MCPS TV. Viewers can also send in questions by email or Twitter.
